Die Tabacalera Joya de Nicaragua ist eigentlich so bekannt, dass man eingentlich keine Worte mehr darüber zu verlieren braucht. Sie zählt zu den ältesten Manufakturen in Nicaragua und produziert zahlreiche Serien unter eigenem Namen als auch für andere namhafte Marken wie z.B. Drew Estate. Die Marke Joya ist bei vielen Aficionados für ihre kräftigeren und direkteren nicarguanischen Zigarren bekannt. Allerdings sind beispielsweise die Clasico - oder auch die Redserie als ehr mild einzustufen und damit bestens für Einsteiger geeignet. Bei der im Jahre 2000 eingeführten Antano 1970 Serie verhält es sich ein wenig anders, denn sie zählt neben der Antano Dark Corjo zu den kräftigsten Zigarren der Marke Joya de Nicaragua und sind somit mit Vorsicht zu genießen. Antano bedeutet im Spanischen soviel wie "einst" oder "früher" und ist als Erinnerung daran gedacht, dass diese Zigarren bereits in den 1960er Jahre eine der beliebtesten Zigarren auf dem US - Amerikanischen Markt waren. Es handelt sich hierbei um kräftige Puros, die seit 1964 komplett aus nicaraguanischen Tabaken gefertigt werden. Das glänzende Deckblatt in der colorado umhüllt ein nicaraguanisches Umblatt und einen komplett nicaraguanischen Filler. Laut ihren Machern soll diese Zigarrenserie "das Land und die Torcedores Nicaraguas repräsentieren, als Frucht der geliebten Felder und schlußendlich als Spiegel unserer Seelen!" Bei der Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Gran Perfecto handelt es sich um ein Gran Perfecto Format mit einer Länge von 15,24 cm, einem Durchmesser von 2,38 cm und 60er Ringmaß.

Kurios: Früher fertigte diese viel zu wenig bekannte Traditionsmarke ausschließlich Corona-Formate, heute sind nur noch die beiden dickeren Vítolas erhalten geblieben, die in den 1990er-Jahren eingeführt wurden. Diese klassische Corona Gorda ist ein Prachtstück von einer Habano, unbedingt zu empfehlen! Rauchdauer: ca. 60 – 80 Minuten.

Aromen

Diesem tollen Blend gelingt das Kunststück, die intensiven Harz- und Gewürztöne einer Partagás mit der Cremigkeit und dem Kaffee-/Kakaoduft einer Montecristo in perfekter Harmonie zu vereinen. Natürlich schmeckt sie nicht genau wie eine dieser beiden Marken, doch vereint sie tatsächlich zwei Geschmackswelten, die vordergründig inkompatibel scheinen, auf das angenehmste! Doch die Aromatik der „S 1“ erschöpft sich keineswegs darin; vielmehr hat sie auch feine, florale Süße zu bieten, dazu Sandelholznoten und eine spannende Entwicklung hin zu mehr erdiger Würze und Power. Eher kräftig als mittel, vielfältig und köstlich!

Roughly at the same time as the “S 1” this Habano was launched in the classic Robusto format. Since the hiring of most regulars, the brand has been known more from various great regional and limited editions; experienced aficionados appreciate the “S 2” however immensely.

Flavours

This magnificent Habano, which should actually be much better known, is massive, original and full-bodied. It tastes of resin, peat, liquorice and tart exotic spices, but also develops more subtle notes of black tea, nappa leather and coniferous wood, in the later course of the smoke also distinctive roasted tones like espresso beans and a hint of malty cocoa taste. A very subtle caramel sweetness hovers over everything. A fully aromatic, noble and very strong cigar, whose subtleties require some attention. Great!

Worth knowing

A weird idea, but a complete success! The manufacturer "Casa Fernández" (Umnum, Condega) packs 8 huge "octopus arms" in the shape of super-thick cigars in a tin and offers the smokes of 90 - 110 minutes each for an unbeatable price. Get sucked in!

Flavours

7 x 70, can that be good? - Well, sure, if you don't expect a miracle of variety! The first word that comes to mind about the taste of the Nicaraguan blend (with Indonesian binder) is "nutty". Whereby the character of this nuttiness definitely changes in the course of the smoke - from sweet almonds to oily peanuts to finely tart walnuts. But also associations like toast, filter coffee and malt are not far away. A coherent, very pleasant pleasure, medium-bodied, with a soft smoke consistency and slight sweetness as well as spice to round it off.

Worth knowing

We have not tested whether this jumbo can actually be used as a cutting weapon or a piece of seating furniture, as malicious tongues claim. However, we can vouch for the fact that the XXXL stumps from the brand-typical tin offer a good 2 hours of short entertainment!

Flavours

Slightly lighter and milder than the "smaller" formats, but also a touch more complex, this giant presents itself (which, by the way, burns quite nicely when carefully lit!). The nutty aromas are a little more in the background than in the "Fanaticos", but noticeably present; in addition, a nice cedar flavour and an increasing discreet earthiness lead throughout the smoke. The clearly present sweetness is reminiscent of milk chocolate. The aromatically consistent cigar remains pleasantly mild and good-natured until the end.

Worth knowing

The octopus for in-between is almost as wide as it is tall! Despite the ship-sinking sea monster on the Anilla, however, there's nothing monstrous about it - it just wants to play! Say: to indulge the fan of large ring dimensions for a good hour.

Aromas

As you would expect, the short one gets to the heart of all the characteristics of the blend without any frills. Distinctive roasted aromas (coffee), the unmistakable nuttiness with a decent hit of chocolate sweetness, creamy smoke texture and a moderate amount of earth/pepper spice make for a cohesive whole that doesn't change earth-shatteringly as the smoke progresses, but delivers reliably until put down. The thickness, with its focus on oily nuttiness and toastiness, exemplifies the character of lighter Nicaraguan tobaccos.

Worth knowing

Kristoff is one of the few manufacturers to still honour the good old Lancero - the timeless long format with a smoking time of approx. 75 - 90 minutes is offered in 4 series. Alongside the "Vengeance", this refined, surprisingly complex version is our favourite!

Flavour

With its excellent smoking properties, this thin cigar gives the lie to all Lancero sceptics - and it also has an astonishing variety of nuances up its sleeve during the entertaining course of the smoke! Citrusy, bitter-sweet ethereal notes, like Campari, constantly float across the palate; the elegant cedar tone of the opening gradually turns into a pleasantly leathery note, walnut and cocoa complement the sensual, racy, exotic flavour concert excellently, underlined by an oriental potpourri of spices. The initially manageable strength slips above mediocrity towards the end. Sensational for this price!

Worth knowing

Don't worry, the "Vengeance" series does not come in a black pudding wrapper, but in a dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and is not as grimly strong as the name suggests. Treat yourself to this foil for about 75 - 90 minutes!

Flavours

If Kristoff boss Glen Case's revenge is always this pleasant, his enemies have little to fear. The main accent here is on toasty, earthy tones, as if testing the menu of a coffee house from mild, milky drinks to black ristretto, with some men's chocolate melting in your mouth. The Perfecto's floral and dried fruit aromas don't play much of a role here, but the marriage of incisive spiciness with mouth-watering umami sensation is all the more exciting for it. Towards the end, the medium-strong cigar tastes of malt and bread crust - delicious!

What you need to know

With this massive format, LAdC pays tribute to the continuing trend towards large ring sizes - in a very sophisticated and stylish way. The combination of RM 56 and box-pressing guarantees a perfect draw and plenty of smoke for around 60 - 70 minutes.

Flavours

Thick, velvety smoke envelops the palate in a cosy atmosphere and pampers it with creamy notes of dark chocolate - this is the first impression after lighting up. The Belicoso is a touch stronger, the thicker one scores with a noticeably more pronounced sweetness, sometimes reminiscent of nougat or caramel. Of course, the distinctive roasted coffee bean flavour is also fully present. Due to its smoothness, you don't immediately realise that this rustic stout is one of the stronger ones - but in the finish, it offers unbridled, spicy and earthy intensity without losing any of its charm.

Die Zigarrenserie Black Lion von La Aurora wurde im Jahre 2016 vorgestellt und wird in vier unterschiedlichen Varianten angeboten. Bei der La Aurora Black Lion Maduro Robusto handelt es sich um ein Robusto - Format mit einer Länge von 12,7 cm, einem Durchmesser von 1,98 cm und 50er Ringmaß wodurch die Madurovariante erwartungsgemäß geschmacklich etwas süßlicher und aromatischer als die anderen drei Varianten ist. Die Charakteristik der Zigarre wird durch Schokoladen -, Kaffee -, Honig - und Karamellaromen bestimmt. Die Black Lion Maduroserie ist insgesamt leichter als die Cameroon und eignen sich deshalb bestens für Aficionados, die eine harmonische, mittelkräftige und leicht süssliche Zigarre bevorzugen.

With the Flor de Cano Elegidos, Habanos S.A. presents a new vitola whose name translates into German as 'The Chosen One'. The production name, which was created especially for this vitola, is "Lirios". It is a classic Robusto format.

Flavours

Friends of H.Upmann's "Conni 1" or Por Larranaga will find a much cheaper alternative in the Elegidos. The superbly made Robusto brings across the classic aromas of milder Cubans in an uncomplicated way - pleasing, gentle roasted aromas with the scent of fresh coffee beans, creamy well-being, fine cedar notes, subtle sweetness with a caramel touch, nutty overtones. The light blend develops in the course of more pithy facets, but retains its balanced, very harmonious character throughout. The perfect afternoon cigar.

Worth knowing

The „last ¨survivor“ of this engaging little brand is a handmade short filler in the (contrary to the name) rather unusual corona small format „Standard“ (smoking time approx. 30 – 40 minutes). As is usually the case with much higher-priced cigars, it is almost entirely covered in a cedar leaf.

Flavours

This rather light, wonderfully fine-flavoured cigar is characterised by fragrant, floral-herbal aromas. The enveloping „Cedro“ contributes the elegant Ätherik of light woods. The typical play of aromas of light Habanos – sweet, white-bread-like cereal flavour, a hint of milky coffee, charming honey –is present throughout and shifts towards a little more spiciness towards the end. But the unique selling point are the sweet, elegant crumb notes. This cigar fits particularly well in the warm months and is very beginner-friendly.

Die La Flor De Cano Selectos ist im Gegensatz zur Petit Corona eine Spezialität. Trotz einer Länge von 15 cm, einem Durchmesser von 1,6 cm und 41er Ringmaß sollte man sich von dieser seltenen Vitola nicht abschrecken lassen, denn die Zigarre mit schicker roter Bauchbinde besitzt eine feine, relativ milde Persönlichkeit voller Harmonie.

This cigar, which is very much in demand, comes to us from time to time in small editions. It's well worth picking up, because the mighty figurado with a smoking time of approx. 100 - 120 minutes is not only really as beefy as a bull, it's also a stunner in terms of flavour!

Flavours

It's clear that a bull has a lot of power - but it's not so strong that you feel like you're being taken for a ride. The aromas even go downright cuddly, spoiling us with opulent sweetness in the huge volume of smoke. Roasted almonds greet us as well as apricots and dried fruit! But also pithy roasted aromas (strong coffee with a little milk) appear in the course of the smoke, as well as solid woody tones and traces of leather scent. As soon as the ring gauge tapers off, it gets spicier (green pepper) and stronger - the exciting smoking experience goes into a furious finale!

Worth knowing

"Night stick" is the name given in the USA to a cigar smoked shortly before bedtime with an intense flavour and (usually) increased nicotine content. This Toro-like large format will let you sink into your springs in a very relaxed manner after about 80 - 95 minutes!

Flavours

Everything about this cigar is dark, literally or figuratively. It's called "the night", the moon shines off the anilla, the wrapper (San Andrés) is almost black - and the flavours are also associated with "darkness". Men's chocolate, oak, liquorice, dried plums and black pepper combine harmoniously to create a concentrated, full-bodied flavour that offers a wide range of sweet, toasty and distinctly spicy facets. In the last third, peat, dark beer and bread crust are added. For all its intensity, this is a very well-balanced, quite strong cigar full of elegance.

Worth knowing

The big sister of the "L-300" contains the same blend and offers even more rustic Ligero tobacco from the best growing areas of the Dominican Republic. A bargain at a price that is hard to beat for fans of undisguised tobacco enjoyment for approx. 70 - 85 minutes.

Flavours

Thanks to the larger ring gauge, this beauty smokes a little creamier and "smoother" than the "L-300" in its immaculate Ecuador wrapper. Otherwise, the relationship is hard to miss, the differences lie in charming details. The earthy pepper/nutmeg spice is slightly restrained here, but the Robusto Grande delivers more fine oak notes to the palate, but also a chocolaty "dark" sweetness, which the "300" does not have in this form. On the other hand, liquorice and even a touch of honey can be clearly tasted, as well as walnut and freshly roasted coffee beans. Fine stuff!

With countless discontinued Vítolas, the traditional brand LGC has unfortunately suffered the same fate as various other Cuban manufacturers. Only this pencil-thin “Palmita“, which has been around for a very long time, is still in the portfolio. Amazing 55 – 70 minutes smokeable. An absolute insider tip!

Flavors

This cigar miraculously combines two very different flavor worlds in perfect harmony. The fruity-sweet flavor of the prelude is reminiscent of brands like Trinidad or Cuaba; here you really feel fresh tropical fruits and flowers on the palate. Impressive! Gradually a clear noble-tart cocoa note creeps in, combined with the fine spiciness of dark wood. But sweet notes remain present. The smoke becomes more spicy, full-bodied and also more crisp. An immensely exciting smoke – wonderful cigar!

Worth knowing

We can't recommend the “small”, less well-known Habanos brands often enough, as they are not one iota behind the better-known ones and are usually priced a little lower. This is also the case with this brand new, ingenious Robusto Largo with a smoking time of approx. 60 - 70 minutes.

Flavor

LGC stands for typical Cuban tobacco enjoyment of the medium-bodied kind and for a “colorful”, rather sweet and sweet taste palette. This new one is not out of line: cedar wood with a cinnamon-tingling aftertaste, traces of fully ripe fruit sweetness, forest honey and a small hint of mint blend in beautiful harmony with the “darker” tones that emerge more clearly as the smoke progresses: Cocoa and malt, licorice, but also delicate overtones of spicy herbs. As you can see, this smoke is a lesson in complexity and a truly perfect summer cigar!

Worth knowing

The name Didier Houvenaghel is always a guarantee for first-class cigars - and this offspring of the Nicarao family is also able to impress critics and customers across the board. Two small Coronas and two thick Robustos from the line produced by A.J. Fernández are waiting for you here.

The expressive blend of just above average strength comes up with plenty of creamy coffee roast flavour as well as with noble leather notes and a fine wood bouquet. The spice, which becomes more pronounced as the smoke progresses - generally a little more pronounced in the Mareva - has an exotic feel and is perfectly balanced with the sweetish notes. The Robusto seems to be more sloppy, milder and more opulent, while the small Corona surprises again and again with ethereal-piquant herbal facets. Good idea to explore the world of flavours of the blend in 2 such different formats!
