Cuba is probably the most famous and best-known country in the world among those countries known for their cigar production. From here come i.a. the world-famous brands Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagas, , Romeo y Julieta and Trinidad. When Christopher Columbus made his way to India in 1492, he discovered the Caribbean island and later brought tobacco consumption to Europe. Since the beginning of the 19th century, Cuban cigars have not only been the ultimate for European aficionados but also all over the world. The Cuban capital is called Habana in Spanish, hence the name Habanos for Cuban cigars. Compared to cigars from other countries of origin such as the Dominican Republic or Nicaragua, Cuban cigars are generally stronger.
The geology of Cuba in connection with the prevailing climate offer ideal conditions for tobacco cultivation and cigar production. The Vuelta Abajo in western Cuba is probably the world's most famous tobacco growing area, where the best tobaccos for the finest long fillers grow. Tobacco experts and cigar smokers agree on one thing: the cradle of the best tobacco is in the westernmost province of Cuba - in Pinar del Rio. The diverse flora and fauna as well as the natural beauty are one of the reasons why parts of the province are classified as worthy of protection by UNESCO. The soils in Pinar del Rio consist of copper-red clay, the climate is humid, and it rains regularly with an annual average temperature between 26°C and 27°C. The plantation area in Pinar del Rio is around 100,000 hectares, with the average area of a plantation that also known as La Vega is around 150 hectares in size. Among the best-known Vegas is that of Hoyo de Monterrey, on which filler tobacco is usually grown, and that of El Corojo, which is used for its wrapper leaves.

Partagás in its purest form! “Minutos” are known for capturing the essence of a brand in just over half an hour using the very best tobacco. The “shorts” are a little more expensive than other small formats - but it's worth it, because none of their sisters bring the flavors of spices, aromatic resin, earth, coffee and the unmistakable light caramel touch to the man as compact and concentrated as they do! Accompanied by a pleasant leathery impression, the spice and earthiness increase as the smoke progresses, even adding a hint of cocoa. One of the best little ones!

Before the revolution, there were plenty of ‘Serie...’ cigars from Partagás, but they were all discontinued under Castro. In 1975, the tradition was resumed with this Robusto. However, this bestseller is a rather ‘modern’ Habano, not too strong and very uncomplicated. Smoking time approx. 55 - 70 minutes.
Flavours
The most beginner-friendly medium Partagás format shines with a compact, engaging flavour. The pervasive resin/incense aroma and the heavy earthy spice of its stronger sisters play second fiddle here at best; the focus is on a wonderful cinnamon flavour, cedar ethereal, roasted bread aromas and the scent of coffee, combined with a fine caramel sweetness. The floral elegance of the ‘Mille Fleurs’ also shines through at times. The great finish is designed for a rather light draw, a large amount of smoke and a good-natured burn. Apart from the stronger finish, the strength levels out in the centre of the midfield.

In terms of format, it's a breakfast cigar, but this traditional Minuto is only recommended to experienced aficionados on an empty stomach. A hearty, intense smoke for approx. 35 – 50 minutes.
Flavours
The nutty, melty sweetness of the larger RA formats is more in the background here. Above all, the smoker can expect a real firework of robust roasted aromas from freshly ground coffee beans, bread crust and toast. The smoke is oily and the taste lingers on the palate for a long time. Notes of dark woods, malt and dark chocolate are added. Due to the format, the development is limited, but the aroma certainly gains in race and depth. Like many other Minutos, a great introduction to the world of their brand!

The trend has recently been towards larger ring gauges for longer cigars too. Partagás took this into account in 2012 with the introduction of this Robusto Grande, which - usually rolled rather loosely - offers maximum smoking comfort for around 70 - 90 minutes.
Flavours
Like many newer Habanos blends from the noughties and twenties (cf. Cohiba "Siglo"), this one also relies more on a playful, delicate aroma than on power or strength. In terms of taste, it is similar to the very different "Salomones" but also to the "Series D", and the "E 2" delights with dominant floral and spice aromas of an "oriental" feel, surrounded by delicious, lingering sweetness. Earth, leather and toast provide the background music, but come a little more to the fore as the smoke progresses. Creamy and opulent, the first two thirds are unusually light for a Partagás; the strength increases considerably in the finish.
Worth knowing
The ERdM small format, barely larger than a cigarillo, nevertheless offers high intensity with medium strength. The classy, stylish Smoke for 25 – 35 minutes and any time of day in the rare “Entreacto” has been on the market for a long time. Quite contrary to the trend towards ever larger ring sizes, he quite rightly keeps sworn fans.
Flavours
Not quite as complex as the „CS”, this pencil-thin Habano has a lot to offer: coffee, roasted and umami taste, the small ring gauge amazingly focused and intense; but also finer, more subtle notes of tropical woods and herbs, vanilla and cappuccino. Perfectly balanced between spice and softness, sweet and pithy tones. She gets more powerful towards the end, with more body but never biting. A real insider tip!

Flavours
One of the spiciest, strongest and most aromatically compact “Trini”. Roasted and nutty flavors characterize the smoking experience throughout; sweetness is also present, albeit more subtle than in the thicker formats. The brand's unmistakable fruity, tropical heart note can of course also be tasted; here it has a delightful subtle acidic touch that makes it a fantastic summer cigar - if you can cope with its not inconsiderable power; not only the fruit acidity, but also the strength is reminiscent of Bolívar. It's strange - the only short RyJ with the Churchill ring gauge 47 does NOT belong to the "Churchill" series! The reason is that this young Vítola, launched in 2017, contains a different blend. Burns for approx. 45 - 55 minutes.
Flavours
Like most of the newer RyJ creations, this one also reflects the light, "friendly" side of the brand. Hay and flower scents, fine honey sweetness, creamy nut/milk coffee aromas clearly outweigh the - nevertheless present - leather and roasted notes, which only gain more space on the palate in the last third. While some other short 47 cigars are more reminiscent of the powerful second half of a "real" Churchill, this one is more reminiscent of the sweet, playful first half. Roughly at the same time as the “S 1” this Habano was launched in the classic Robusto format. Since the hiring of most regulars, the brand has been known more from various great regional and limited editions; experienced aficionados appreciate the “S 2” however immensely.
Flavours
This magnificent Habano, which should actually be much better known, is massive, original and full-bodied. It tastes of resin, peat, liquorice and tart exotic spices, but also develops more subtle notes of black tea, nappa leather and coniferous wood, in the later course of the smoke also distinctive roasted tones like espresso beans and a hint of malty cocoa taste. A very subtle caramel sweetness hovers over everything. A fully aromatic, noble and very strong cigar, whose subtleties require some attention. Great!

The somewhat lighter „Open“series was introduced in 2009. Its image is aimed more at younger, sports-minded and outdoor-savvy aficionados. Originally it was supposed to be called „Sport“, this Toro-like vítola „Monaco“. Either way, a great smoke for 80 – 100 minutes!

The large ring gauge brings out the characteristics of the – – – Open“ blend; – bright“, creamy latte notes, grassy-floral sweetness, less toast but more brioche, less cocoa but more whole milk chocolate than the classic series – particularly opulent and well-pleasing. A very good „smoke bomb“ smooth of medium strength, quite beginner-compatible despite its stately dimensions. Clearly milder than e.g. the „No. 2“ and with a more consistent flavour, it is nevertheless fully aromatic and shows a nice flavour development in the course of smoking.

The medium format of this exceptional series is about the size of a Toro. It is not a half-baked compromise between the other two Vítolas, but for all its similarities, it has its very own, appealing character.
Flavours
This is the „1935“ with the „brightest“ aroma and the most uncomplicated smoking characteristics (which does not mean that the others are complicated – on the contrary!). The wonderful coffee flavours are most prominent here, the mouth-watering smoke is fabulous, the yummie-factor of this cigar has something of a tasty earthiness. A little more linear in its development, it nevertheless makes a clear flavour development. The cocoa notes are most intense in the finish. Like all the “new” Qd'O, this is also a sensational “feel-good cigar”. As clearly the strongest representative of its brand, it never exceeds a moderate strength. Due to its format, the flavor development from sweet, “light” to more bitter “dark” aromas is most pronounced. The interplay of aromas offers a mega-harmonious combination of sweetness, umami and cream. Latte macchiato, caramel, brittle, roasted almonds come to mind; everything about this Habano is flattering, soft and incredibly pleasing. Smooth, woody and mellow in flavour like all Guantanameras, the Decimos are a little more savoury and spicy in aroma. Like the “Hermoso No. 4”, the “Corona Gorda” format also stands out with its enormous quality density. A good example is probably the best-known Punch, which actually bears the brand name three times. A connoisseur's favorite, medium strength, with 65 - 80 minutes of smoking time.
Flavours
Together with the “Double Corona”, certainly the most complex, most “colorful” punch in terms of taste. This is where the brand's unique fruity note, somewhat reminiscent of red apples, comes into its own most clearly. It mainly dominates the first third, but is interspersed with wood, nut and roasted aromas right from the start, creating a wonderful interplay of ethereal, sweet, spicy and umami flavors. Aromatically more closely related to RyJ and HU than to MC or Allones, for example, the blend nevertheless has a character all of its own. This very short Cazadores variation was only introduced in 2014. It is one of the brand's lighter and more elegant cigars. Suitable for beginners and absolutely suitable for everyday use! Smoking time approx. 30 - 40 minutes.
Flavours
The unexpectedly charming smoke is largely characterised by floral and tart flavour facets. In this respect, it is closer to the favourites than most other Corona-like formats and is also sweeter than these (honey). The strength is also relatively moderate, the thinner Quinteros are all a little stronger. Perhaps the best cigar as an introduction to the brand, good-natured and pleasant until the last puff. Towards the end, the typical character emerges more clearly with more earthy, roasted notes.

It may come as a surprise that today's most popular cigar format was only included in the Cohiba portfolio with the international marketing in 1989 – of course, with justifiably great success. Those who expect more smoothness and less strength than with the Coronas should, however, be prepared for an intense smoke of 60 – 80 minutes, because the „CoRo“ has a lot of punch!
Flavours
As is typical for the format, there is no „smoking-in phase“ with restrained aromatics. The usually rather loosely rolled cigar immediately delights with pithy wood, walnut and coffee flavours, slightly earthy-roasty underpinnings and cushioned by fine, floral honey. Overall, however, it is more of a noble, yet wonderfully creamy umami cigar, full-bodied and immensely „satisfying“, always more crisp than medium. Here, it is less about maximum variety in the course of the smoke than about a coherent, cohesive flavour. This Habano simply tastes like the very finest tobacco from A to Z!

The dwarf of the series in the rare format „Trabuco“ has the narrow ring gauge of a Lancero and thus also some of its smoking characteristics. A quite intense little smoke for about 30 – 40 minutes!

The typical aroma concentration of small-diameter cigars is immediately noticeable here – the strong coffee aromas are equally present and in some cases are more reminiscent of „classic“ Montes than other representatives of the „Open“series. The „Junior“ also appears a little more crisp. It still offers the characteristic, creamy-smoky smoke consistency of its sisters, as well as fine sweetness, a hint of cocoa and fragrant hay notes in between.
