What you need to know

The Extra Anejo 12 year old is produced by the Santiago de Cuba company. This was founded in Cuba in 1872 under the name Matusalem Distillery. The subsequent period is characterised by various changes of ownership. The rum achieved great fame during Prohibition in 1930, when many Americans travelled to Cuba to drink as a result of the ban on alcohol in the USA. After Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, he also took over the distillery, which had previously been run by descendants of the company founder. They then emigrated to the USA and tried quite unsuccessfully to continue running the company there. The rum has been produced again since 2001 and the name of the original Matusalem rum was changed to Santiago de Cuba.

Flavours

The flavours of the 12-year-old Santiago de Cuba rum are characterised by its ageing in the tropical Cuban climate. As soon as it is poured, it exudes a wonderfully rich and sweet aroma of caramel, dark chocolate and vanilla, rounded off with harmonious fruit flavours. On the palate, it has a lovely, oily texture with caramel, wood, honey, vanilla, spice and almond flavours. Gradually, sweetish notes emerge, revealing the long ageing period. The long-lasting finish is rounded off by almond flavours and a subtle spiciness.

What you need to know

Peruvian cuisine is one of the most colourful in the world, so it is not surprising that this South American country is home to an exquisite rum that can compete with the big names in the industry.

Flavours

The basis for the copper-coloured Ron Millonario Solera Reserva Especial 15 year old in the glass is molasses, made from sugar cane grown under the best climatic conditions, which is distilled in three old Scottish copper stills from the last century. After distillation, it is matured for 15 years in Slavonian and American oak barrels using the solera method, and the nose is captivated by a long-lasting aroma of candied fruit, toffee, caramel and sultana notes. On the palate, it reveals its incomparable flavour profile with sultanas, toffee and ripe fruit aromas. The oily finish is long-lasting and characterised by sweet sherry, fruit and oak notes.

Worth knowing

First in bourbon, then in cognac barrels, this approx. 5-year-old value-for-money champ from Belize and Guatemala matures. With some power, it is a wonderfully soft pleasure of remarkable aromatic complexity and with a noticeable character of its own.

Aroma

The first impression on the nose is of animating freshness - the scent of tropical fruits merges with that of fine spices. The palate is initially dominated by velvety vanilla and intense honey sweetness, but soon the fruity notes reappear, underpinned by expressive tart-sweet facets. Sip by sip, the brandy reveals its depth of flavour, with the distinguished tannins of dark woods, a hint of cocoa and the subtle influence of the two different barrels. Only in the finish does it show its power, when a wisely measured pinch of warming pepper is added.

Flavours

A smooth and aromatic rum that is suitable for everyone. The dominant flavours of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and roasted almonds are persistently present throughout the enjoyment. The play of aromas is accompanied by slightly spicy overtones.

The excellent Ron 7 Siete Villas 1511 Rum

Worth knowing

Top quality fine spirits need not be prohibitively expensive by any means, as this rum aged for many years in bourbon barrels proves! The "Gold Medal in World Spirits Competition" is truly not won by everyone - this great product, which has come a long way from the Carribean before being bottled in Catalonia, actually made it in 2021!

Flavours

The soft, seductive scent is already something special. Vanilla and coconut come to mind, but also quite a few fruits like sultanas and plums. What is striking and exciting is that this image does not stick to the palate in more or less the same form. Rather, the sweetness evident on the nose is initially rather restrained in the mouth; the taste is fresh and ethereal, subtle, initially characterised by the profound woody aromas of many years of barrel ageing. Sip for sip, the sweet character is then expressed again in a ravishing caramel note, supported by animating toasty facets that are reminiscent of various nuts as well as cocoa beans. A super-harmonious pleasure with its very own profile!
