A red lion on a golden background proudly looms from the old Scottish royal coat of arms - the perfect name for a homage to the company's home country. And the powerful, unadulterated blend could not be more ‘British’. Pure tobacco enjoyment!
Flavour
Latakia, with its penetrating flavour reminiscent of resin/incense and an entire spice bazaar, clearly plays the leading role here. And yet the Lion is by no means a mere duplicate of the ‘Black Mallory’! Despite all the - considerable - power, there are also a number of sweet facets to be tasted here, contributed by the Golden Virginia as well as the fruity-floral oriental tobaccos used here. Above all, however, Rattray's ‘all-purpose weapon’ shines through beautifully here, namely the noble Black Cavendish with its ‘jammy’ dried fruit character. A sweet and savoury, emphatically smoky pleasure.

Alles fing in der Regierungszeit von Queen Victoria an. Der 1880 geborene Charles Rattray machte in Dundee (Schottland), dem Mittelpunkt der britischen Tabakindustrie, eine Lehre im Tabakvertrieb. Mit der Zeit entdeckte Rattray seine rege Freude am Ausprobieren eigener Mischungen. Das Gefühl für einen guten Blend und die Lust am Experimentieren führten ihn so weit, dass er sogar die ortsansässigen Händler mit eigenen Tabaken belieferte. 1903 ließ er sich in der ehemaligen schottischen Hauptstadt Perth nieder, wo er sein eigenes Geschäft eröffnete und unter seinem Namen Tabak vertrieb. Es folgte ein rasanter Aufstieg: Seine erlesenen Mischungen erfreuten sich schnell zunehmender Beliebtheit und schon bald wurde sein Name in ganz Großbritannien bekannt. Er erweiterte sein Sortiment und stieg in den Handel mit Pfeifen ein - bis heute sind sie eng mit dem Namen Rattray´s verknüpft. Die Kernkompetenz seines Geschäfts liegt jedoch im Kreieren erstklassiger Tabake. Mittlerweile ist es die Firma Kohlhaase & Kopp, das unter dem Namen Rattray´s produziert. Vor allem klassisch englische, zunehmend jedoch auch dänische, also aromatisierte, Tabakmischungen bilden das Sortiment der Marke. Besonders bei den Aromatisierungen erweist sich die ursprünglich eher traditionell ausgerichtete Marke überraschend experimentierfreudig. Was die Noten, mit denen die Blends verfeinert werden, angeht, besitzt Rattray´s ein vielseitiges Sortiment. Es reicht von klassischer Vanille über die Aromen von Rum oder Cognac bis hin zu Kokosnuss.
