Allein der klangvolle Name weckt bei jedem Aficionado Erinnerungen an die Kindheit und die erste Begegnung mit dem Roman Der Graf von Montecristo von Alexandre Dumas. Die Namensgleichheit ist kein Zufall, sondern der Tatsache geschuldet, dass der Roman eine der Lieblingslektüren der Vorleser für die torcedores in der Manufaktur H.Upmann war, wo sie ursprünglich handgefertigt wurde. Auf der Suche nach einem gebührenden Namen für die Spitzen-Habanos war man sich also schnell einig. Seit ihrer Taufe in den 1930er Jahren ist die Montecristo eine Instanz, an der keine andere Habano vorbeikommt. Zumindest für die Liebhaber mittelkräftiger Mischungen.
