Spring cleaning in the humidor
đ At the moment we are all spending a lot of time at home, so we have plenty of time for spring cleaning. Which is why this is not
History
As a young man, Zino traveled to Central and South America and the Caribbean, eager to learn and looking for inspiration. Back in Switzerland, he noticed that high humidity was very important for storing cigars and built the world's first climate room in the basement of his father's cigar shop in Geneva. To make this possible for all aficionados, he eventually developed a smaller humidor with a sophisticated humidification system like the one we know today and that you may already have at home.
Correct humidity and maturation
Humidors are specially made for the storage or long-term storage of cigars. They are essential when cigars are stored for a longer period of time. Storing the best cigars requires an environment in which the fragile balance between humidity and temperature is maintained. Therefore, a high-quality humidor must meet three requirements in order to be the ideal storage place for your cigars.
It must:
- have a humidity level between 70% and 72%
- maintain the above-mentioned humidity level consistently and without major fluctuations
- be made of material that does not affect the taste or feel of the stored cigars
In addition, the humidor should not be left in direct sunlight all day or next to a heater, as the ideal temperature for storing cigars is around 21 degrees. Many cigars are comparable to wine in this respect. This means that when properly matured, it becomes even more elegant and balanced and the taste even more refined.
Caring for the humidor and the cigars
The heart of every humidor is the humidification system. This varies depending on the manufacturer. Davidoff humidification systems should be filled with distilled water about once a month. Most systems have a way of recording the date of the last check. This means you can see at a glance when the last filling took place. Using distilled water prevents bacteria from entering the system and limescale from forming. Davidoff humidification systems are designed to absorb too much humidity and release moisture when the air is too dry. If the humidity is too high, simply open the humidor overnight or for a few hours. In general, it is advisable to air the humidor at regular intervals (about once a week) and give the cigars a little fresh air.
Tip
If a light, white coating has formed on the cigars due to excessive humidity, this can be carefully wiped off with a dry, clean cloth. Then store the cigars at the right temperature. This should allow the cigars to recover and be ready to enjoy again after a certain amount of time. As part of the spring cleaning in the humidor, make sure that you rearrange the cigars. From the lower levels to the upper ones and vice versa. This ensures that the cigars are evenly moistened from all sides. Do not stack the cigars too close together. Leave some space between the cigars so that the air can circulate in the humidor.
