Worth knowing
Named after one of the most famous tobacco plantations in the heart of the legendary Cuban growing region of Vuelta Abajo, the globally available brand Hoyo de Monterrey proudly looks back on a tradition spanning more than 150 years. Designed from the outset for fans of light tobacco enjoyment, the cigars in its portfolio - from small formats to the impressive Double Corona - are very popular with beginners as well as experienced aficionados.
Flavours and strength
The Epicure No. 2, a classic Robusto, was around before the Cuban revolution, making it one of the evergreens in the range - and rightly so, because the consistently superbly crafted Habano is a prime example of a balanced, intelligent tobacco blend and uncomplicated smoking properties. The smoke begins with a fine spicy wood aroma and wonderful honey sweetness; the typical underlying earthiness of Cuban cigars plays a very unobtrusive role. A gently piquant taste like roasted cereals soon follows, before nutty, creamy notes dominate the very charming play of aromas - one thinks of coffee with milk and also a little of roasted almonds. As the cigarette progresses, the taste becomes a little 'darker' and more intense, a hint of cocoa is added, and the roasted coffee aroma becomes more pronounced without ever displacing the fermentation sweetness and the sweeter notes.
Despite its overall low strength, which only reaches the middle range towards the end, the "Epi 2" is in its own way quite full-bodied and flavorful, so that even smokers who would otherwise prefer stronger tobacco will get their money's worth. The voluminous smoke has a beautifully soft consistency and never becomes bitter or acrid until the end, so that you can literally smoke the extremely gentle-burning cigar down to your fingers. Then, if you enjoy it at a leisurely pace, smoking times of up to 70 minutes are possible.
Conclusion
Despite the generous filling, the draw resistance is quite low - but in contrast to some notoriously underfilled non-Cubans, it is definitely noticeable. The Epicure No. 2 is really a cigar for everyone and every occasion, which you only put down to avoid blisters. With its length of 12.4 cm and its diameter of 1.98 cm, which corresponds to a 50 ring gauge, it is the ideal introduction to the world of medium-sized Habanos formats and thus the perfect first cigar on a lazy Sunday, the ideal companion on a spring walk - and a very welcome alternative in the summer heat, when even hardened Habaneros refrain from reaching for the BolĂvar or Allones box.
